Shame of Chicago

An anti-racist educational tool to place it into the hands of instructors and civic leaders for generations to come.

How can our young people make sense of America’s segregated cities—the chasm between black and white wealth, our divided schools, police violence and concentrated poverty in poor communities of color, and so much more—if their understanding of what happened in the past remains so limited?

The Shame of Chicago is a series of mini-documentaries about the history of housing segregation that took root throughout much of the 20th century. Told through the stories of those who experienced the spread of northern segregation, and struggled to fight it, the journalists who documented it, and the scholars who have studied it, The Shame of Chicago will unpack this little understood history with a gripping narrative that illuminates the wider national catastrophe facing today’s racially segregated cities.
